How to fix a broken Longest Move Streak

For some people, maintaining a Longest Move Streak on their Apple Watch for a significant duration can be very motivating and conversely, if that streak is broken it can have the opposite effect. Apple added the Pause Rings feature in WatchOS 11, which can help avoid a broken streak due to illness, travel or other reasons. However, sometimes circumstances preclude using the Pause Rings feature and a long-running streak is broken. It can be very disheartening to wake up in the morning and see that your longest move streak ended yesterday and your current streak is 0 days.

If you find yourself in this position, take the following steps:

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn off Set Automatically.
  2. Tap on the date shown and set it to yesterday.
  3. Tap on the time below the calendar and set it to more than one hour before midnight (10:58pm).
  4. On your Apple Watch, open the Fitness app and adjust the Move goal to a number of calories less than the number of calories you burned that day.
  5. Wait for the time to elapse past the hour mark (11:00pm), and you should see a notification for Achievement: Longest Move Streak displayed on the watch. On the iPhone, the Fitness app should show the Achievement badge, and tapping the badge to see the back side should show that it was earned on currently-set (i.e., yesterday’s) date.
  6. On your iPhone, in Settings > General > Date & Time set the time to just before midnight (11:58pm) then let the time elapse until the next day (12:01am), i.e. today's date.
  7. Turn the Set Automatically setting back on.

You should now have an unbroken Longest Move Streak.

Some disclaimers and speculation:

  • I have not tried this set of steps for a Longest Move Streak that was broken more than one day ago.
  • It might be possible to go back more than one day by setting the date in Step 2 accordingly, but most likely it would need to be done iteratively from the day the move goal was missed. For example, if you didn’t notice the broken streak for a week, you would set the date 7 days back in Step 2, then after Step 6 repeat Steps 3 – 6 for five more cycles until you reach the current date, and then complete Step 7. Note that I have not tried this.
  • I do not believe that the above steps would ‘heal’ a missing day to merge a prior streak with the current streak (but again, I have not tried).
